The Rise of the Cloud is the most significant technology trend since the rise of mobile.

In fact, one led to the other, as mobile led to IT infrastructure access patterns that made accommodating that access increasingly difficult for on-premise infrastructure.

Cloud infrastructure provides a solution for sporadic mobile access patterns because it’s elastic – enabling service capacity to be added during peak demand periods and then be relinquished when it’s no longer needed.

Because of that, cloud technology has become ubiquitous, with no slowdown in demand for cloud capabilities in sight. The business models supported by public and private cloud providers are solid and very attractive to enterprises as an alternative to on-premise computing infrastructure.

In a recently published Technology Spotlight report, IDC states that “worldwide spending on technologies and services that enable digital transformation is expected to reach $1.97 trillion by 2022, with the information communication technology (ICT) industry growing 2.1X faster than Worldwide GDP.”

That’s an incredibly rapid market growth and adoption rate. But does that mean that there aren’t any problems that create cloud adoption limitations?

In the report, IDC further examines digital transformation and cloud adoption dynamics as well as the issues limiting cloud technology adoption – particularly for network monitoring and management. In specific they state that “modern infrastructure environments — whether they're highly virtualized on premise, or in a distributed cloud-hosted setting — pose unique complexities with respect to network monitoring and management.”

IDC also shows that 60% of the respondents to survey question, “in the next two years, what specific area of investment does your organization plan to make in its performance management systems?” cited stated cloud performance monitoring as their highest ranked priority.

IDC summarizes their analysis by stating that, “Network performance monitoring tools have become essential for optimizing enterprise networks and implementing increased levels of automation. The rise of cloud computing services has presented significant challenges and made enterprises realize that these new platforms require new tools, optimized for hybrid and cloud environments.”
