Access Point and Ghost SSID’s

As i mentioned in this article, I've seen this issue you had on many different types of equipment. Don’t worry about what kind of equipment I have. I would prefer you concentrate on the methodology so if you come across something similar you can deal with it.

As I said earlier, I have seen this in other environments but was surprised when it happened to me.

In the past two weeks the wifi seems to be quite unstable, so I thought I would finally break down and take a look at it at all LOL

The first thing I did was run a scan and noticed there was several unidentified new Wireless Networks on the list.  I live in a rural area with no real neighbors so I can’t blame any new wireless access points getting a lit up in my area.

In this article I show you how to use windows command is to start your troubleshooting.  I thought it would be different to show you how to troubleshoot with your built an operating system commands rather than an expensive handheld testing tool.

In the video, you’ll notice that these "HT" Wireless Networks have similar Mac addresses.  After logging into the access point, I noticed there was nothing in the configuration to correlate with what I was seeing in the air.

Heres a screenshot from Homedale, a favorite free windows utility

Since this wireless access point has been powered on for over two years I thought why not reboot it?  After the reboot everything cleared.  I also realized that the wireless access point is well 10 years old so maybe it’s time for an upgrade, what do you think?
