While setting a new network for a customer, I took the opportunity to provide some customized training. The client was relatively new to networking as well as Cisco products. One topic in particular that caught the customer’s attention was the concept of static routes.
He asked why not use a routing protocol that will automagically learn and exchange the routes rather than manually typing routes in manually. Excellent question indeed!!!
I explained that if the network is small enough, manually defining the routes gives you ultimate control, reduces router processor overhead and adds an extra layer of security since all the routes used are the ones you configured. The most common static route that some people will recognize the default route used to direct users to the internet.
Lastly static routes can be used in combination with any routing protocol.
In this video I walk you through how to configure static routes between 2 routers.
