In my sessions we talk a lot about what can affect performance.
We cover many of the basics like different types of latency but when I mention the WPA2 performance related notes on 802.11n, I get quite a bit of interest.
I had a student who implemented 802.11n in his factory, but saw no performance increase because he had to use WEP to support legacy WiFi devices.
